New funds for new commissions

The Performing Right Society Foundation (PRSF) is offering an extra funding opportunity this year with its successful Awards for New Works scheme in October.

The PRS Foundation is looking for adventurous and innovative commissions for high quality music of any genre, which have the potential to be performed more frequently in the future.

The average Awards for New Works offered is £3,000 - £4,000 and this will support those wishing to commission a new piece of music of any genre by UK based music creators.

Across the UK, organizations are working closely with music creators to devise exceptional new work in many different styles. They attract inquisitive and inspired audiences who want to hear the best music being written today.

Previous successful applications include the Scottish Ensemble who commissioned Steve Martland to write a new piece which will be toured throughout Scotland this year; Liverpool John Moores University commissioning Simon Thorne to create a large-scale installation as part of Liverpool Capital of Culture and Michael Nyman’s new piece for the Great North Run 2007.

Charlotte Ray, director of the PRS Foundation said: ‘The range and quality of commissioning in the UK is invigorating to all those who enjoy new music. This is our most popular funding scheme and we have provided an extra opportunity at this point of the year to try to respond to the demand.’

So far this year The Performing Rights Society Foundation has funded 26 commissions through Awards for New Works. It is the UK’s largest independent funder for new music of any genre.

Application Deadline: Friday 12 October 2007
