PPL AND PRS JOIN TOGETHER AS CO-SPONSORS OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY TRUSTS AWARD 2007 TO HONOUR KYLIE MINOGUE

The Music Industry Trusts Award Committee are delighted to announce that PPL and PRS are confirmed as joint sponsors of the 2007 event which will honour Pop Princess, Kylie Minogue. The Award will be presented to Kylie on the evening of 29 October at London’s Grosvenor Hotel in the presence of over 1200 guests from the UK’s music and entertainment industry.

"PPL is delighted to co-sponsor the 2007 MITS Dinner with PRS," said Fran Nevrkla, Chairman & CEO, PPL and VPL. "Working for our respective constituents - the performers and the record companies, the songwriters and the music publishers - it is entirely appropriate that PPL and PRS join together to support the industry and this event, bearing in mind its history and tradition of raising money for a wide range of very deserving causes. Our joint collaboration is even more fitting this year when Kylie is the artist being honoured. Her talent, dedication as well as her genuine charm, coupled with determination to overcome adversity, has ensured that she is one of the best-loved artists worldwide and the most played female artist on UK radio over the last twenty years. We salute Kylie and all the musicians and writers who have been involved in the creation of her music.”

“PRS is excited to be working in partnership with PPL to help make this year's MITS dinner a successful one,” commented Steve Porter, Chief Executive, PRS and MCPS. “Nordoff-Robbins and the BRITS School are reasons enough for our involvement but Kylie as this year's award recipient is the icing on the cake.

Kylie, together with the writers, performers and creative supporters she has worked with over the years have contributed so much to the industry we all love.  We look forward to a tremendous evening and to ever closer working with PPL.”

You can count on the fingers of one hand the number of “pop” artists who’ve lasted more than a decade, let alone more than two decades. In July 1987 Kylie released her first single, a remake of the 1962 Little Eva hit "Locomotion". The song hit No.1 in Australia and remained in the top spot for seven weeks, becoming the biggest Australian single of the ‘80’s. Twenty years later she now holds the record for the most played female artist on UK radio over the last 20 years.

In her long and illustrious career Kylie has written, co-written and performed some of pop history’s most memorable songs, working with artists and songwriters such as Nick Cave, Robbie Williams, Manic Street Preachers, Cathy Dennis, Scissor Sisters, Guy Chambers, Blood Shy and Brian Rawling. It’s entirely appropriate that PRS and PPL, as the two major UK music licensing companies, co-sponsor the MITS in the year in which she is honoured.

David Munns, Chairman of the Award committee, said; “It's fantastic to see PPL and PRS working together to sponsor this award and there is no doubt that of our 15 Award recipients to date, Kylie is by far the most glamorous. She deserves this award for her success over 20 years, staying at the top in one of the toughest professions and inspiring millions with her grace, dignity and humanity. PPL and PRS are the perfect sponsors for this event and we’re delighted to have them on board.  The work they undertake on behalf of their members is key to the continued success of the industry and it’s artists and we thank them for their support.”

The MITS Award Committee are delighted that Kylie is this year’s honouree. The Award is being presented to Kylie in “recognition of her universally acclaimed status as an icon of pop and style achieved over a 20 year career which has seen her reinvent, experiment and inspire.  Kylie has established one of the longest and most successful careers as a performer in contemporary popular music and her tenacity and determination to succeed, on and off the stage, have been an inspiration to so many.  Kylie has a unique place in this country’s heart and an appeal that seems to grow ever wider.  We salute Kylie for her unique gifts as one of the great entertainers of all time.”

“It is an incredible honour to be the recipient of this year’s Music Industry Trust’s Award and I am truly thrilled to be recognized in this way” Kylie responded. “As well as being a fantastic evening, this award ceremony also raises much needed funds for The BRIT Trust and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and it is a pleasure for me to be involved.”

The Music Industry Trust’s Award In association with PPL & PRS is in its 16th year, and has raised over £2.7 million for its two charities, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and the BRIT Trust (which includes the BRIT school for Performing Arts and Technology).  The Award was established in 1991 with the twin aims of honouring an individual and raising money for the nominated charities.  The Award is unique because it recognises the contribution that an individual has made to the music industry, from a range of activities: producer, film composer, record company executive, music retailer.  Previous recipients include Sir George Martin, John Barry, Peter Gabriel, Ahmet Ertegun, Elton John and Bernie Taupin.  The charity event is renowned for producing an evening that is inspirational and often moving, with some unique live performances from artists such as Rod Stewart, Elton John, Peter Gabriel and Youssou N’Dour.

Note to editors:
Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy is a charity that gives care and support to adults and children through music therapy.  It is a state registered profession and is dependent on the generosity of donors for its funding.  The BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology is the only non-fee paying arts school in the UK.

The BRIT School in South London provides a unique education for 800 young people who do not have a privileged background and want to choose a career in the arts industries.  As the only free performing arts school in the country, the BRIT School is very different to normal vocational schools, with a very diverse intake of talented kids who would otherwise not have the opportunities to develop their potential in music, musical theatre, dance, theatre, media, art and design or technical theatre (production).  It is a unique place with a history of success and innovation.   www.brittrust.co.uk

PPL
PPL is the London-based UK music industry service company which licenses recorded music on behalf of over 3,500 record companies and over 40,000 performers. The company collects domestic and international broadcast/new media revenues and public performance income which is then distributed and paid to record companies and performers.

These include featured artists as well as all session musicians, ranging from, for example, orchestral players to percussionists and to singers. PPL, the largest society in the world collecting and distributing such revenues, is a not-for-profit company, acting as it does for and on behalf of all its members. All income, after running costs, is distributed amongst the companies and performers whose tracks have been either broadcast or played in public.

The company's other services include, amongst others, VPL, CatCo and Music Mall.

PRS
PRS - the Performing Right Society - is home to the world's best songwriters, composers and music publishers. We ensure composers, songwriters and music publishers are paid royalties when their music is used in live performance, on TV and radio, as downloads and streams from the Internet and when it is played in clubs, pubs, shops and more.  Royalties create a future for music by providing vital support to music creators, enabling them to continue to write and create more music.

PRS has 50,000 members and, via agreements with the rest of the world’s collecting societies, represents in the UK hundreds of thousands more creators from around the globe. In 2006, PRS and its Alliance partner, MCPS, distributed over £500m to composers, songwriters and music publishers around the world.

For users of music, PRS and MCPS offer simple solutions to gaining access to around ten million pieces of copyright music.
