 Podcast 15

Every month we will be creating a podcast featuring members that we think you'll be hearing more about.

This month we are featuring The Sorren Maclean Band, Radar M, Milke and Samantha Marais.

The Sorren Maclean Band

This month’s first act is The Sorren Maclean Band, an acoustic trio from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, who are proud to be loud!

The band has been playing all over Scotland for the last couple of years.  They have supported King Creosote and Frightened Rabbit among others, and headline shows include the Wickerman and Belladrum festivals in 2007.

With Sorren himself on vocal and guitar duties (and writing the songs), the band also features Gordon Maclean on double bass and John Barlow on drums, both of whom also provide backing vocals, creating the band’s rich vocal harmony sound.

They have recently been recording an acoustic album with Colin MacIntyre, of Mull Historical Society, which will be released towards the end of 2008.

This is Cold Old Corridor, by the Sorren Maclean Band.

Radar M

The musical collective known as radar m came together at a festival in North Africa, where singer Ramon de Juan was performing.  Long-term musical collaborators Jose and DC saw his show and were knocked out by his globally influenced set.  After the show, the sought him out and invited him to be the singer in the project; thus, radar m was born.

The latter part of 2007 was spent recording what will be the debut radar m album, Bossa Novacaine, which combines Arabic, Indian and Latin elements with western pop.  The album will be released on the Vandal label later in 2008, and features our podcast track , Es Irreal.

Milke

Already something of a cult band to those in the know, Milke is the brainchild of producer Friendly and singer Ra Khahn.

Friendly, known to his family as Andrew Kornweibel, began as a breaks DJ, and still plays out regularly all over the World. He branched out into producing, and as well as his own material, he has remixed tracks for acts from INXS to the Rocksteady Crew.

Ra Khahn’s background is in more formal music – he studied jazz and classical, and has worked with many major artists as a backing singer.  It was hearing one of these recordings that inspired Friendly to Google him, little knowing that within half an hour they would be exchanging emails, and mailing each other CDs.

Milke is a genre defying project, with rock, electro, R&B and breaks all thrown into the mix, inevitably getting attention from XFM’s Eddie Temple Morris.  Not just a studio project, Milke is a live act too, featuring Luke on drums, Ruth on bass, Ra on vocals and guitar, and Andrew on keyboards and backing vocals.

We have their track Just Say Yes for our podcast.

Samantha Marais

Our final act this month, Samantha Marais, was inspired to become a musician by her father’s passion for Bob Dylan and her older brother’s love of the guitar.  She started playing guitar herself at the age of 8, and has been singing and writing songs ever since.

In the late 90’s she former her first band, and when they split, she returned to her acoustic guitar and her folksy roots.

The new material, from Samantha’s debut solo album “The Peppermint Conspiracy”, is in turns spine-tingling and sensually warming, like picking up a whisper of jasmine scent on a warm spring breeze.  The album is available now, and features our podcast track, Ordinary Man.

Samantha is performing around the UK this summer; for dates and information how to get hold of her music, visit myspace.com/samanthamarais
