The Music Quiz Games (MQG) Agreement covers the use of music in music quiz games available for sale to the public in the UK.

How to obtain clearance for the use of music in music quiz games.

What are the rights and formats covered under the scheme?

The scheme covers the mechanical and synchronisation rights across DVDs, videos, console games, PC or Apple Macintosh Games formats (other formats may be agreed by us).

 

How do you apply for the scheme?

To apply you must complete the MQG application form and return it to us.

 

Once admitted onto the scheme, do you have to apply for individual product clearances?

Yes

 

How do you obtain product clearance under the scheme?

To obtain clearance you must complete the MQG application form and return it to us, along with a signed copy of the agreement.

If you are using music videos you will need to contact Video Performance Ltd (VPL) on 020 7534 1400 to obtain clearance.

If you need clearance for any sound recording copyright you will need to contact Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL) on 020 7534 1000.

 

How much do you pay?

The agreement covers music clips which are up to 30 seconds in duration.

Charges are as outlined below:

 

Total number of 30 second music clips contained within the game Rate per unit of the game shipped (excluding VAT)
 Up to 100 Clips  £0.75 per unit
101 to 150 Clips  £1.00 per unit
151 to 250 Clips   £1.25 per unit

Product containing over 250 clips are subject to MCPS Board approval.

 

All clearances are subject to a minimum of 20,000 units being manufactured.

 

How does the payment process work?

Application form and signed agreement submitted to MCPS ---> MCPS return countersigned agreement ---> Invoice sent by MCPS ---> Clearance granted on receipt of payment.

 

What does the scheme exclude?

Advertisements or sponsorship. Graphic rights. Sound recordings (other than Production Music). Use of any music that implies approval or endorsement by the composer, writer or any artist associated with it. Online and mobile distribution of copies of the product or clips of music. Games which are not music games (i.e. games which are not music quiz games or quiz games with a music section comprising over 20% of the overall content).

 

What are the main restrictions of the scheme?

Use of any music clips longer than 30 seconds in duration.
